Allagash Wilderness Waterway FAQ

How do I register for the Allagash Wilderness Waterway?  You will register when you arrive at any North Maine Woods checkpoint on your way to the AWW.

Can I reserve campsites ahead of time?  No, AWW campsites are on a first come first serve basis.  If you plan to camp at a particular campsite and it’s occupied, you’ll need to canoe to the next one.  You may want to consider securing your desired campsite in the afternoon instead of waiting until evening.

Can I pay with a North Maine Woods with a credit card?  Yes, most NMW gates are accepting credit cards.

How much are the AWW camping fees(including 9% sales tax)?  Under 10 is free.  Maine residents $6.54 per person per night.  Non residents $13.08 per person per night.

Can I fish along the Allagash River?  Yes, the river has a population of native brook trout above Allagash Falls, below Allagash Falls you can catch Muskie.  You will need a valid Maine Fishing License.  Click here to purchase on line. Also be familiar with Maine fishing rules and regulations.

Are there stores or services available along the river? No there are no services or stores.  You should bring everything you need with you before entering the North Maine Woods.

What about cell phone service?  There is no cell phone service on the river.  You will live.

What is the best time of year to canoe the Allagash River?  June and July are the most popular months. August is good also water levels can get low.
