Best time to paddle the Allagash River?

Beautiful waterfall on the Allagash River

Portage around Allagash Falls

What is most important to you?

The most popular months to paddle the Allagash River are June, July and August.  Ice out is typically late April.

Is it Fishing?
Late May into mid June will have the best brook trout fishing and excellent water levels, but you will need to be prepared for biting insects and cold water temperatures.

Mild temperatures?
Air and water temperatures warm dramatically in July and August for comfortable camping and swimming conditions.  Biting insects will begin to taper off.   Water levels can get low in some sections in August.

Wildfile viewing?
Any time of year you visit is a great time for view and photographing  along the Allagash River.  Expect to see moose, deer, beaver, otter, mink, and occasionally a Canada Lynx can be spotted.  Waterfowl and birds of prey abound in the river.

Solitude?
Autumn is a beautiful time to paddle the river amid the fall colors.  There are fewer paddlers in the fall, expect warm days and cool nights and the biting insects disappear.
