Maine Black Bear Hunts
Boasting the largest black bear population in six decades, Maine black bear numbers are on the increase and estimated to be 25,000 to 30,000 animals, which is far more than any other state in the Eastern United States.
The majority of the statewide bear harvest comes from Aroostook County where a 3.5 million acre industrial timberland is relatively undeveloped and provides excellent bear habitat. Make the extra effort to come to northernmost Aroostook County where the bear population is the highest in the state of Maine.
At Tylor Kellys Camps we've guided Maine bear hunts for over 35 years. We guide a limited number of bear hunters: about 15 per week so each bear hunter is given individual support and guidance. We work hard to give you every advantage to harvest a Maine black bear.
Hunting black bear with hounds is an adrenaline rush that can't be explained...only experienced. A physically challenging chase through rough country that begins at dawn. Tenacious hounds equipped with GPS collars pick up the trail and you're off on a fast paced chase. The sights and sounds of this hunt won't soon be forgotten. Limited space, we take just 3 hunters per week!

It’s worth the trip to Allagash to hunt the extreme north country near the Canadian Border. Two sites are leased for each hunter; by Thursday if you haven’t seen a bear, or passed on a bear, you have can move to a fresh site for the remainder of your hunt. After a bait site has been hunted it is retired until next year, so most of our sites only get 1-3 days of hunting pressure each year.
We lease about 90 bait sites in “North Maine Woods”, a 3.2 million acre multi use commercial forest. Many sites have been established for over 35 years. Wind direction, cover, and bear sign are all factors considered when choosing a bait site location. We hunt from 15" metal ladder tree stands or specially designed elevated wooden blinds that sit 5′ off the ground; great for those who don’t like heights or have physical limitations.
Our bow and rifle sites have shooting distances between 15-40 yards set up for left or right handed shooters. All sites are within a 20-60 minute drive from camp, and a 50-60 yard walk from the truck. We have double stand/blinds available for a guest or cameraperson.
